Profile

Dr. Dan Riew is an internationally recognized expert in cervical spine disorders, and is one of only 2-3 spine surgeons in the world to limit his practice entirely to the cervical spine. His patient roster includes celebrities, athletes, world leaders, and, most notably, other physicians who seek the very best for disorders of the cervical spine. Dr. Riew has advanced skills in both minimally invasive procedures that can be performed on an outpatient basis and complex revision surgeries and deformity corrections, and he has performed more surgical procedures on the cervical spine than almost any other surgeon in the world. His expertise and experience on such a large number of patients combine to make him the go-to surgeon for cervical spine procedures. For the past 20 years Dr. Riew has been regularly named to the lists of America’s Top Doctors, Best Doctors in America, New York SuperDoctors, and Top 25 Spine Surgeons in North America by Orthopedics This Week.

TRAINING
Dr. Riew received his undergraduate degree from Harvard and his MD from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine. He completed his first residency, in medicine, at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, then a second residency in orthopedic surgery at George Washington University Hospital. He has completed research fellowship training in cardiology and biomechanics, and completed a spine surgery clinical fellowship with the renowned cervical spine surgeon, the late Henry Bohlman. He spent 20 years at Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis until taking a position at NewYork-Presbyterian Och Spine Hospital/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, where he served as Director of Cervical Spine Surgery as well as co-chief of the Spine Division of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and co-director of the Adult and Pediatric Comprehensive Spine Fellowship.

RESEARCH
Dr. Riew is widely published, with more than 300 peer-reviewed journal articles to his credit, and he has been the principal Investigator on more than 35 spine studies at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. His research includes outcome studies on artificial disc replacement, deformity correction surgery, and the use of biologics in cervical spine surgery, among many others.
