Publications, Lectures and Presentations:

Patients with significantly elevated or diminished BMI may exhibit a variety of health consequences, including metabolic and endocrine alterations, as well as decreased fecundity. The reproductive impact of elevated BMI has been well studied, but few studies have convincingly quantified the effects of low BMI on oocyte and embryo quality and implantation efficacy. Patients with low BMI are known to be at risk for alterations in steroid metabolism, insulin
secretion, and changes in other hormones, including ghrelin, leptin, and adiponectin. The current study aimed to determine the impact of low BMI on ovarian response to controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) for IVF.

Extended embryo culture to Day 5/6 has become standard procedure in many IVF laboratories
internationally. The value of prolonging culture to Day 7 is debated due to concerns regarding the reproductive competence of slowly developing embryos. However, a report published by Su Yu et al. showed Day 7 blastocysts have up to a 36.7% euploid rate and were shown to have a 20% pregnancy rate at transfer. Still, there is limited published data to support routinely prolonging blastocyst culture to Day 7 for slowly progressing embryos. This study describes observed aneuploidy and pregnancy rates in embryos cultured to Day 7 of development in a single IVF lab.
