(Houston, April 25, 2013) – A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) confirmed that transvaginal sonography is the single best diagnostic tool for evaluating a woman with a possible ectopic pregnancy and should always be utilized in this scenario.

John R. Crochet, Jr., M.D., a fertility specialist at the Center of Reproductive Medicine (CORM) is the lead author in the article, “Does This Woman Have an Ectopic Pregnancy?”

“Approximately two percent of pregnancies are ectopic pregnancies, said Dr. Crochet, and unfortunately, ectopic pregnancy remains a major source of woman’s health morbidity and health care expenditures in the U.S.”

Frequently, physicians were only utilizing abdominal ultrasonography, or no imaging at all, when evaluating women with ectopic pregnancy. The finding in the study confirms that that is not ideal.

Dr. Crochet joined CORM in August 2012 after completing his training at Duke University Medical Center. He has continued his career-long devotion to advancing women’s health care and has published articles on various topics including diminished ovarian reserve, polycystic ovary syndrome, uterine fibroids, and hormone function.
