Profile

Dr. Orit Markowitz is a leading dermatologist, skin cancer specialist, and CEO and Founder of Markowitz Medical. She has been called a dermatologic pioneer for her groundbreaking work developing minimally-invasive diagnostic and treatment protocols for skin cancer. Her motto: Cutting Edge Without the Cutting™

Leader, Educator, Innovator

Over the past decade, Dr. Markowitz has served as Director of Pigmented Lesions and Skin Cancer at both Mount Sinai Department of Dermatology and Brooklyn Veterans Hospital of Downstate University Medical Center, as well as Associate Professor of Dermatology at Mount Sinai and SUNY Downstate University Medical Center. Dr. Markowitz has trained and certified hundreds of residents, and she currently runs a fellowship in non-invasive imaging and early detection at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

The Creation of Markowitz Medical

In 2021, Dr. Markowitz opened Markowitz Medical, a state-of-the-art treatment, training, and research center to help bring her signature nonsurgical skin cancer care to more patients and to more physicians. In addition to being a world-class dermatologic practice, Markowitz Medical is a training center for other dermatologists who seek to learn the latest non-invasive skin cancer management protocols and bring them back to their own practices and patients.

A Commitment to Education

Dr. Markowitz is considered a leading educator in noninvasive skin cancer therapies. She has directed imaging courses for the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), she trains all residents in the greater New York area on dermoscopy, and she wrote A Practical Guide to Dermoscopy, the leading handbook on the topic. Dr. Markowitz has also lectured at numerous AAD conferences, is President of the International Optical Coherence Tomography Society, Chair of the AAD’s Quality Assurance and Education Committee Cutaneous Imaging Group, and she is the chair of the World Congress of Confocal Microscopy Conference to be held in New York City in May 2021.

Why Research Remains a Priority

Considered one of the world’s leading researchers in nonsurgical skin cancer treatment, Dr. Markowitz opened Markowitz Medical, in part, to act as her primary research lab. Dr. Markowitz has acted as principal investigator in multiple U.S. clinical trials studying the use of noninvasive imaging in skin cancer, precancer, psoriasis and eczema, and her most recent funded imaging research includes early diagnosis and optimal management of skin cancer and prognostic indicators of medications on disease, such as field cancerization, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, nail fungus and allergy patch testing. Dr. Markowitz was the recipient of 2018 Melanoma Research Humanitarian Award for her groundbreaking work in early melanoma diagnosis and significant contributions to the treatment and care of melanoma patients.
